Discover the Sacred Heart
“They will look on Him whom they have pierced.” (John 19:37)
The Sacred Heart of Jesus is not merely an image or a simple devotion. It is the contemplation of the very mystery of God's love revealed in Jesus Christ. In Sacred Scripture, the heart represents the very center of the person—the place of love, will, and mercy. To contemplate the Heart of Jesus is to contemplate His human and divine love, a love that gave itself completely on the Cross for the salvation of the world.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish but may have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
The Heart of Jesus in Sacred Scripture
“I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” (John 10:11)
The Sacred Heart is the Heart of the Good Shepherd, who seeks the lost sheep, carries the weak, and lays down His life for His flock.
“Learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29)
Christ invites us to enter into His own Heart, where we find peace, consolation, and true rest.
“One of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.” (John 19:34)
The Church Fathers saw in the blood and the water the signs of the Eucharist and Baptism. From the open Heart of Christ, the Church was born as His Bride, just as Eve was taken from the side of Adam.
The Sacred Heart: The Revelation of Divine Mercy
The Heart of Jesus is a Heart that loves to the very end:
“Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.” (John 13:1)
Even on the Cross, Jesus prayed:
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34)
The Sacred Heart reveals to us that nothing is greater than the mercy of God. No sin, no weakness, and no wound is stronger than His love.
Promises of the Sacred Heart
Through the revelations entrusted to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, Jesus made known a series of promises to encourage the faithful to live in His love. These promises are not automatic or magical guarantees; rather, they are an invitation to genuine conversion and a life of trust in God.
The Twelve Promises of the Sacred Heart
I will give them all the graces necessary for their state of life.
I will establish peace in their families.
I will comfort them in all their afflictions.
I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all at the hour of death.
I will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.
Sinners will find in My Heart the source and the infinite ocean of mercy.
Tepid souls shall become fervent.
Fervent souls shall quickly rise to great perfection.
I will bless every home in which an image of My Sacred Heart is exposed and honored.
I will give priests the gift of touching the hearts of even the most hardened sinners.
Those who spread this devotion shall have their names written in My Heart, never to be erased.
In the excess of the mercy of My Heart, I promise that My all-powerful love will grant the grace of final perseverance to those who receive Holy Communion on the First Friday of nine consecutive months.rventes.
A Call to Respond to Love with Love
The Sacred Heart of Jesus is, above all, an invitation to respond to God's love with our own. During His apparitions to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, Jesus revealed His Heart, surrounded by thorns and surmounted by the Cross, and said:
“Behold this Heart which has so loved mankind that It has spared nothing, even to exhausting and consuming Itself, in order to testify to them of Its love; and in return, I receive from the greater part of men nothing but ingratitude, through their irreverence and their coldness toward Me.”
These words reveal Christ's sorrow at humanity's indifference, but even more profoundly, they reveal the immeasurable depth of His love. Jesus does not ask first for great works; He asks for hearts that love Him, trust Him, and remain close to Him.
To respond to love with love is to welcome His Heart into our lives, to console Him through our fidelity, our prayer, our adoration, and our charity toward our brothers and sisters. It is to choose each day to live in His friendship and to say to Him with our whole lives:
“Lord, since You loved me first, I desire to love You in return.”
